Flat Feet

What is Flat Feet?
Flat feet, also known as fallen arches, occur when the arches of the feet appear lower or flatten during standing and walking.
Flat feet are very common and, in many cases, are completely normal.
Some people have naturally flatter feet without experiencing any symptoms or limitations. Treatment is usually only recommended when flat feet contribute to discomfort, reduced function or other foot related problems.
At Podiatry Medics, we assess both foot posture and how your feet function — because not all flat feet require treatment.
Symptoms of Flat Feet
Some people with flat feet may experience:
- Pain or discomfort through the arch or heel
- Tired or aching feet
- Fatigue after prolonged standing or walking
- Swelling along the inside of the ankle
- Reduced comfort in certain footwear
- Foot, ankle or lower limb discomfort during activity
Symptoms can vary from person to person.
How Are Flat Feet Diagnosed?
At Podiatry Medics, assessment may include:
- Physical examination Assessment of foot posture, arch height and lower limb alignment.
- Gait and biomechanical analysis Observation of how your feet move during walking.
- Imaging referral where clinically appropriate Such as X-ray or ultrasound if further investigation is required.
Understanding whether flat feet are flexible, functional or contributing to symptoms helps guide treatment decisions.
Treatment Options
Treatment depends on symptoms, goals and overall foot function.
Options may include:
- Orthotics or supportive insoles
- Footwear recommendations
- Stretching and strengthening programs
- Targeted strengthening exercises
- Activity and load management
- Bracing or taping where appropriate
Surgery is only considered in selected cases and is not required for the vast majority of people with flat feet.
What Can You Do to Support Your Feet?
Simple changes may help reduce symptoms:
- Wear supportive footwear
- Maintain a healthy weight
- Avoid long periods of standing where possible
- Strengthen foot and ankle muscles
- Stretch regularly where recommended
- Gradually build exercise tolerance
